Fifth International Communication Styles Conference: Communication in Times of Permacrisis
- access_time 20 stycznia 2023
The International Communication Styles conference is the fifth in the series of biannual conferences which were initiated in 2013 and took place four times in Krosno, Poland (see the first conference opening speech by Geert Hofstede). This time, after a pandemic break, we would like to invite international scholars to the city of Krakow, Poland.
We welcome papers related to all aspects of communication styles, broadly understood as clusters of features of verbal and nonverbal language that run the spectrum of discourses, genres and media and mark social and cultural differences. The 5th ICS Conference brings into focus the theme of communication in times of permacrisis, recently named the Collins Word of the Year 2022 and understood as “an extended period of instability and insecurity”. It aims to examine the diverse effects of social, political, economic, and cultural conflicts in public and private communication across cultures and genres.
We invite linguists, communication scholars, folklorists, translation scholars, language teaching scholars and experts in related fields to submit abstract proposals on topics that include, but are not limited to discussing how various communication styles are used in coping with:
- climate (environmental) crisis
- health crises
- food crisis
- energy crisis
- political crisis
- war crisis
- migration crisis
- religious crisis
- personal crisis
- and other crises
The papers could deal with various types of discourses (public and private, business, political, social media, and face-to face, translation), genres or registers, drawing attention to intra-, inter- and cross-cultural communication issues, such as populism, propaganda, polarization of opinions, political correctness, politeness, netiquette, hate speech, obscenity and taboo, humour, creativity, metaphor, intertextuality, and globalization as exemplified by the use of English as lingua franca.
Abstract submission in English (up to 300 words through the conference website at https://tertium.edu.pl/en/): 30 January 2023
Abstract acceptance: 15 February 2023
Conference registration (including payment of fees): 1 March 2023
Conference 24-25 April
Submission of papers to Tertium Linguistic Journal: 30 April 2023
Publication: autumn or winter 2023
So far the conferences have a publication record with a collection of articles entitled Culture’s Software: Communication Styles (Cambridge Scholars 2015), a special issue of the Styles of Communication journal (9:2; 2017) and several issues of open access Tertium Linguistic Journal (including 3.1 in 2018 and 5.1 in 2020).
We would like to invite all the conference participants to submit a paper to Tertium Linguistic Journal – the 2023 issues of the journal are open to ICS contributions. Deadline for submitting to issue 8(1) is April 30, 2023 and to issue 8(2) is June 30, 2023. The journal is indexed in a number of international indexes and databases (see journal.tertium.edu.pl).
